Description/Narrative:
Created in 2002, “9/11:  Red, White and Blue,” a temporary installation, echoes the locator aspect of the Gateway Pylons, in that it references both the United States and its focused attention to the solemn day of September 11, 2001.   I wanted to illustrate both context and contemplation by the use of white light, which contains the entire spectrum of light and represents the diversity of life, and the specificity of America’s use of  the red, white and blue as a heartfelt aspect of our unity and identity.

The public art piece (Kinetic Light Installation, untitled, 2000) was twice interrupted for 24 hours with this tribute, the first time commemorating the one-year anniversary of 9/11 in 2002, and the second commemorating the 5-year anniversary of 9/11 in 2006.  The 2006 display was made possible after a technological upgrade to the Gateway Pylon lighting system.  Utilizing contemporary LED technology, “9/11:  Red, White and Blue” was the first program to be displayed with the renovated Gateway pylon lighting.  On December 5 2006 the original public art work was reinstalled.  On December 20 2006 Los Angeles World Airports displayed its own “Holiday Light Program” within the pylons.  The original program was reinstated 11/02/07.
